This first concert was a tremendous success, bringing together over 600 patrons, and generating over US$25,000, along with hundreds of pounds of canned goods and new clothing donated by attendees. Internationally acclaimed Jamaican tenor Steve Higgins, joined by The South Florida Caribbean Chorale (SFCC) and Brick & Lace, performed for an audience of more than 600 people at St Benedict’s EpiscopalAnglican Church in Plantation, Florida. The crowd – led by Plantation Mayor Nick Sortal and several council members, pastors, and well-wishers – enjoyed an inspiring mix of Jamaican classics by Harry Belafonte, Bob Marley, Ernie Smith, Noel Dexter, Clyde Hoyte and Olive Lewin, ranging from authentic Jamaican folk songs to classical patriotic favourites. Jamaicans who were present felt that nostalgic, almost tearful tug, as The Chorale, directed by Higgins, delivered a powerful and passionate performance of Jamaica’s national song I Pledge My Heart Forever to Serve with Humble Pride, followed by Jamaica Land of Beauty (Lloyd Hall), climaxing with the Jamaican national anthem. The SFCC also performed sacred pieces, including selections from Handel’s Messiah, Contemporary classics, Broadway favorites, and Dear Jamaica – a moving piece written by Higgins, set to the melody of Verdi’s Va Pensiero (“Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves”). Brick & Lace wowed the capacity audience with their stunning presence, and delivered intricately melodious harmonies for their set which included “I can see clearly now, the rain has gone”, a selection that was apropos. But it was Father Albert Cutié who brought down the house with a rendition of Bob Marley’s Three Little Birds! Cutié, who is of Cuban heritage, was all decked out in Jamaican colours, and powered through Every Little Thing is Gonna be Alright, while Rev’d Debra McLaughlin provided backup singing and dancing! What a fantastic evening it was! All funds raised were presented to Food For The Poor, at their headquarters: 6401 Lyons Road, Coconut Creek, Florida on Thursday, November 13, at a formal in-person presentation. These funds will go directly to deliver relief, aid, support and assistance to the people of Jamaica, who have been affected, displaced or impacted by Hurricane Melissa. This concert series marked the beginning of an ongoing partnership between Food For The Poor and Steve Higgins Productions to support Jamaica’s recovery from Hurricane Melissa. Higgins continued in concert last weekend in Los Angeles, California, at St John’s Cathedral, where an enthusiastic and visibly moved audience showed full appreciation to his solo act appearance. Atlantic Charters – South Florida’s premier Charter Bus company has also joined the partnership, transporting the troupe to select concerts in the series. Other concerts already announced and confirmed by Steve Higgins Productions, in partnership with Food For The Poor include; • Central Florida; Saturday December 13th, at 4:00 p.m. at The Solid Rock Church, Kissimmee (partnering with the Jamaican Cultural Connection) The concert series will continue after the Christmas holidays into 2026, with Higgins scheduled to appear in Canada, The United Kingdom and across Europe. Higgins, who was born in Jamaica and still has family on the island, shared, “Many homes were destroyed, and people are still unaccounted for. Jamaica needs our continued help – so the concerts will continue.” The concert series is sponsored by The Jamaica Tourist Board, Atlantic Charters and Steve Higgins Productions. - Contributed South Florida Relief Concert a ‘tremendous success’ FORMAL ORDER IN THE SUPREME COURT OF JUDICATURE OF JAMAICA CIVIL DIVISION CLAIM NO.
