21 Aubrey Campbell/Gleaner Writer NEW YORK, NY: CAMPERDOWN HIGH School Alumni won its fifth title in 30 years, beating a spirited Cornwall College 1-0, to take home the Jamaica Alumni Football Tournament (JAFT) trophy on June 29. The two-day, weekend festival was played at the James Fleming Park, Yonkers, NY. Camperdown topped the Over-45 (Masters) Division, becoming the winningest school since the tournament was introduced in the Bronx, in the summer of 1995, by Dave ‘Broadie’ Stewart and his team. Dressed to impress (best uniformed team) and marshalled by their ‘MVP’ Troy ‘Pepsi’ Pinnock, it was clear that he Boys from Kingston 2, came to play, knocking out Jamaica College 3-1 in the semis, before blunting a rejuvenated CC by the odd goal in the championship match. And when captain Shawn Brooks raised the JAFT Championship hardware, at the presentation, the joy in the camp was one of ‘mission accomplished’ as was the case in 2001, 2002, 2009 and 2023. For Cornwall College, it was their best showing since 1995, when they lost in the final to Kingston College on a Derrick ‘Yabba’ Forbes goal at the Evander Childs High School stadium, Bronx. Edwin Allen was voted ‘most disciplined team’ of the eleven schools that participated in the O.45 division. Clarendon College’s Richard Thompson won the ‘golden boot’ for his tournament high, five goals. RECOGNITION In the Under.45 Division, the colourful ‘Cornwallians’ – best uniform – taking orders from the legendary Steve Bucknor, fell to a more youthful Jamaica College, 3-0. Ziedone McLean was voted ‘MVP’ for his two goals in the finals. Griffin Football Club again pocketed much of the spoils and the hardware in the seven team, Youth Division. Led by captain and MVP, Jamie Cregan and the sharp shooting Santi Vidalon (leading scorer), Griffin ‘Blue’ beat Westchester Wolves 1-0, for the U.14 crown. FC Juggernaut, after beating the visiting Harbour View team from Kingston, Jamaica, in the semis, were no match for Griffin ‘Blue’, who put on a 4-0 spanking to win the U.12 title. Leo Shkreli was the unanimous choice for MVP. The Arambe SC, helped by the very promising Tijana Thomas – MVP – won the U.10 title on penalties over Griffin ‘Blue’, after both teams were deadlocked at 3-3, at the end of the 25 minutes regulation. High point of the festival was the recognition of Lebert Halliman, cited for his decades of dedication and service to the development of youth soccer in Jamaica. Reuniting and reminiscing with some of the very players he coached, was most humbling, he said during his acceptance speech. Halliman also accepted the award for Jackie Walters, who was unavoidably absent. Looking ahead, tournament director, Bob Austin praised the teams and the more than 2,000 fans who participated and watched the matches. “Overall, the tournament was a successful one, when all is said and done. It will be better next year. We have a few things to be addressed (team registration/rules/ sponsorship), as the tournament is growing every year.” C’down, JC, division winners at Alumni Soccer Festival, NY FIVE AND COUNTING. Lawrence Haughton, 67, died on Tuesday at an out patient facility in New York after an extended illness. Patricia ran Alken/ Apel for several decades. The company was built from the ground up by her pioneering father Al Lawrence and the company was at one point the largest black-owned retail travel agency in New York City, generating significant growth for travel business to Jamaica, the wider Caribbean, and to various countries in Africa. Alken/ Apel was also the first Blackowned agency in the lucrative New York tri-state market region to secure a contract with American Airlines in the early 1980s. The then legendary senior vice president of American Airlines Peter Dolara became a great admirer of Alken and a friend of the family. “I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Patricia Lawrence Haughton”, John Lynch, chairman of the Jamaica Tourist Board lamented. “Alken was my first client when I started working in ground transportation many years ago. I was very close to her family and on behalf of Jamaica, I would like to salute Pat for the wonderful work she did over the years to grow travel to Jamaica. LEGACY STANDS TALL Lawrence Haughton was a mover and shaker in the business of events travel, and she was also engaged in a range of community activities in New York. Although she became less active in recent months due to illness, she still found the strength and the courage to attend the 70th anniversary party of the Jamaica Tourist Board a few weeks ago at the Hard Rock Hotel in Times Square, New York where she was warmly embraced by colleagues, well-wishers and friends. “It is with a heavy heart that I honor the passing of a great friend and a remarkable woman whose legacy stands tall in the world of travel, culture and community”, David Lampel, veteran New York City broadcaster and the owner of several TV stations across the USA and the Caribbean told The Gleaner. Pat and her company opened a gateway not only for tourism but for deeper cultural and economic ties that transformed the way Black Americans and Caribbean Americans experienced the world”, he added. Patricia’s brilliance, dedication and passion earned the admiration of global airlines, tourism boards and communities around the world. When she decided to marry, she took her own wedding in the 1990s to the Ocho Rios resort that had just opened (Ciboney, now Sandals Ochi) so as to support the new resort with her army of influential friends. “Pat’s passing marks the end of an era”, Vinette K Pryce, her close friend and New York City journalist told The Gleaner. “Pat’s efforts enabled thousands of Americans to attend jazz, reggae, dancehall, R & B and hip hop events across the USA, the Caribbean and Ghana. She will be greatly missed”. Lawrence Haughton is survived by her husband Noel, her younger brother Alex and other relatives and friends.
