JAMAICA’S TEAM of 60 track and field athletes headed to the XXXII Olympiad in Paris boasts a mix of experience and youth that says much about the future of the sport in the island. Unlike in Olympic entrances in recent times, there aren’t many in the team who have won individual gold medals or medals for that matter. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Hansle Parchment are the only ones who can claim that honour, the latter the lone defending champion headed to the Games. That doesn’t mean the team lacks experience though, with Shericka Jackson, having won individual bronze over 400 metres, as well as others who have been to the big stage on numerous occasions like Shanieka Ricketts and Kimberly Williams in the triple jump. More striking than those more experienced heads, though, are the number of new Turks looking to make a name on the Olympic stage. Among the men, Ackeem Blake, Kishane Thompson, and Oblique Seville represent the new guard among the country’s sprinters. Names like Lanae-Tava Thomas and Niesha Burgher over the 200 metres are certainly new. Tia Clayton has just shown a glimpse of what she can do at the senior level, while Shashalee Forbes, and newcomer Alana Reid can’t claim they’ve seen it all before. Still, the newcomers and almost-newcomers do have a wealth of experience to lean on. Coaches Glen Mills, Paul Francis, Mark Elliott, Julian Robinson, Reynaldo Walcott, and Michael Frater have seen it all before. GLADSTONE TAYLOR/ MULTIMEDIA PHOTO EDITOR Olympic track and field team features many new faces Aubrey Campbell/Gleaner Writer NEW YORK, NY: THE 2024 staging of the Jamaica Alumni Football Tournament (JAFT) crowned two new champions in St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS) and Munro College (MC), as Camperdown High School and Charlie Smith Comprehensive failed in their bids to repeat. STATHS beat Herbert Morrison Technical in the Over-45 division for its second title since 1998, and MC won Under-45 title, denying Calabar High School, the 2012 and 2022 champions, a third hold on the prized hardware, as the tournament concluded at the James L. Fleming Park, Yonkers, NY, on Sunday, June 30. Saved for a 60-minute stoppage due to rain on Sunday afternoon, the bigger winner over the two-day weekend festival was Herbert Morrison Technical High School, copping the prized hardware for discipline and deportment, for a record three years in a row, and according to captain Keith ‘Baddas’ Tomlinson, this one was as special as it was ‘bittersweet’. “Representing HMTHS has always been a privilege. Ever since the days Evander Childs High School, Bronx, we’ve participated proudly and held our heads up high through ‘strength & perseverance’ as stated on our logo. Our determination allows us to not only compete but show the utmost respect for our opponents…COMPRE4LIFE!!” FIRST PRESENTATION The undisputed leader and motivator, the former all-schools/juvenile and national senior team invitee, took it all in stride, having to watch from the sidelines due to a recurring ankle injury during day one of the tournament. That said, judges Rupert Williams, Alfred Henry and Bradley Stewart had no difficulty in crediting the team for their overall comportment throughout the tournament. The reward, the first presentation of the beautifully crafted Alfred E. Simms trophy, presented by the family – daughter Ama, sons Shaka and Sefu and son-in-law, Sean Crudup – during ceremonies where the late Simms was remembered as an entrepreneur, philanthropist and community organiser. Newcomers Campion College was voted best dressed in the U-45 division. STATHS made it a no-contest for the ‘Real Masters’. In the youth division, Griffin Football Club reigned supreme, lead by MVP Noah Thomas in the Under-10 and Neziah Nesbeth in the Under 13 divisions.Mikai Pollock of Young Stars Academy, won the golden boot for his tournament high, 4 goals. Tournament director Ezron ‘TegoBob’ Austin, a JC alum and Manning Cup – ‘86-’87 – standout, was surprised with an award from his peers for shouldering the responsibility of the tournament, post-COVID-19 pandemic.
