16 Aubrey Campbell/Gleaner Writer BRONX, NEW YORK: THE ORGANISATION for International Development (OID) will this year recognise four individuals for ‘sterling service’ to humanity, the community and volunteerism, in general. Dr. Sunil Stephenson and Dr. Daniel Goldstein will each receive the OID Humanitarian Service Award. Both surgeons are being honoured for their commitment and collaborative efforts in relation to ongoing cardiac surgeries performed as part of the annual mission at The University Hospital of the West Indies. The missions were started in 2019, and 2020, and resumed last year, after the pandemic and continued earlier this year. To date, the team of specialists from the New York area provides care and consultation for 43 patients in Jamaica, who benefitted from open-heart surgeries and the use of heart and lung machines. Cordella Cautherie, RH, NP, MPH, will receive the OID Volunteer Service Award as the local sponsor of the annual mission to Jamaica. Normadelle Rose, office manager/RJRGleanerNorth America, will be presented with the OID Community Service Award, not only as a member of the organisation, but for her involvement and help with philanthropic endeavours through several organisations in the diaspora. According to OID president, Dr. Michelle Malcolm-James, ‘Our honorees continue to make a difference and a positive impact on our programmes and its mission and especially in the fight for affordable healthcare to under-served communities around the world’. “We have since identified a critical need for expanded screening services in Jamaica, evidenced by the alarming rates of breast, prostate and cervical cancers in the (Caribbean) region, in general. Lives are at stake and time is of the essence,” she offered. All proceeds from the spring luncheon set for Sunday, April 21, Greentree Country Club, New Rochelle, New York will benefit ongoing work in Jamaica and planned medical missions to the Caribbean and southern regions of Africa.
