The cheques were handed over to the scholars by Barrington Harvey, president of the NewYork chapter, and represents the first of a five-year commitment worth J$1.4 million from the new Thermutis &Willis Christie Family Foundation to the school. “Benefactor and alum Norman Christie wanted to give back to the school, and the football team in particular, while recognising his parents,” noted Harvey during the brief, in-person ceremony at the school’s chapel in Montego Bay. He said that it was a no-brainer that the football programme would have been targeted, as Norman and his two brothers, Anthony and Glenford, distinguished themselves while playing on the school’s senior team in the DaCosta Cup competition. Each year for the next five years, three boys who are enrolled in the football programme at the school will benefit from the scholarship based on academic performance and need. The Thermutis & Willis Christie Family Foundation was represented by Paulette Gooden. The three recipients, Deshaun Talbert, Dantae Escoffery and James Welds, along with their parents, principal Michael Ellis and guidance counsellors Rev Sydoine Jeannite and Mrs. Roxanne Gordon-Higgins, attended the ceremony.
