Aubrey Campbell/Gleaner Writer NEW YORK, NY: T HE IDEA of giving back to her homeland, Jamaica always burned bright in the mind of Terri-Ann Henry who had worked for years in the healthcare industry in Canada. She has now chosen to transfer that passion and her expertise to the local healthcare field and has since set about transforming that dream into reality. Welcome toVillage Green Care (VGC), a healthcare establishment that will add quite a bit to an area of expertise that is under-utilized in Jamaica. She has kept in touch with happenings on the ground by whatever means available, including frequent visits to families and loved ones in Kingston, Jamaica. For now, she is and will be the face and voice of the business which is registered with the Companies Office of Jamaica. So, how did the name Village Green Care, come about? “The name involves ‘village’ to reflect the African proverb that ‘it takes a village to care’ for our vulnerable population, our children but in this case, the elderly. ‘Green’ reflects the fact that St. Ann is known as the ‘Garden parish’ of Jamaica - ‘lots of greenery and always lush,’ was how she framed her response. Terri-Ann says that this new phase of the journey is driven by the passion and patriotism of Jamaicans in the global space. “I’ve recognized that over the years, there has been an increase of returning residents to Jamaica from the Diaspora. These residents look forward to having the same comforts and expect the same standards they are used to in the country they lived and worked for many years. Village Green Care was created out of the recognized need to provide a registered, in-home care service that is professional, reliable and offers quality services at the highest standards to residents in the communities of St. Mary, St. Ann, Trelawny and (St. James) the Montego Bay, Kingston and St. Andrew metro areas”. COMMUNITY FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENT There are plans to eventually expand the services Village Green Care offers to the entire Jamaica. In fact, organisers are currently in the process of securing and constructing a retirement home in St. Ann, for those looking to live in a safe and community friendly environment. Terri-Ann noted that the global pandemic will present challenges that were not part of the original plan, however the team at VGC will not be deterred. “As returning resident myself, I have a special love for Jamaica and am excited to deliver a service that will work to not only provide persons needing assistance with the care they need in the comfort of their very home, but will also give persons the opportunity to continue to live and retire in the place that they work so very hard to return.” “ In addition to providing a much- needed service to members of our community, we are also looking forward to the creation of sustainable jobs that will help to foster economic growth and social change for the people of Jamaica, whichwill ultimately work to elevate our beautiful Island.” There are two Home Health Aides (HHA) in place as well as a care coordinator with plans to increase the numbers, commensurate with the client base. And, regarding concerns and challenges brought on by the COVID 19 pandemic? “All staff are required to be fully vaccinated prior to starting with a new client,”was her quick, candid response.
