5 NEW YORK, NY: H ARLEM, CONSIDEREDbymany to be the cradle of Black civi- lization in the USA, continues to be home to a vibrant and growing immigrant community from Africa, the Caribbean and beyond. As always, the village of Harlem is about the culture, literature, food and fashion. From the fashionable Sunday Caribbean churchgoers of the early 40’s to the trendy, dapper dons of the six- ties, Harlem continues to set the trends with its politicians and socialites. The pandemic notwithstanding, the Annual Harlem FashionWeek held dur- ing the first week of September, this year highlighted the creative work of generations of Africans and Caribbean nationals nationwide, and we are de- lighted to showcase a small sampling here.
