AP TORONTO AS THE Christmas season approaches, three Jamaican Canadian organisations and a new Toronto councillor of Jamaican heritage are gearing up to celebrate it with various events. 4 The Jamaican Canadian Association (JCA)will host its Family Holiday Festival, a free event, on December 11 at the JCA Centre in Toronto, from noon to 5 p.m. with Santa Claus, vendors, games and prizes, DJ and singing, and a health and wellness centre. 4 PACE Canada will hold its Holiday Event and Toy Drive on December 9, 6-9 p.m., at Blackhurst Cultural Centre on Bathurst Street in Toronto, where there will be musical entertainment, prizes and surprises, and greetings by Consul General Lincoln Downer. Those attending are encouraged to bring an unwrapped item for the toy drive. The tickets are $20. 4 PACE Canada will also give an update of the ‘Jamaica Strong’ Contest. In addition to celebrating 60 years of Jamaica’s Independence, the contest aims to show the strength of the country and its people. Entries were solicited from PACE-sponsored schools, and each school could submit only one entry which represented the entire school team. Entries are required to demonstrate the theme of ‘Jamaica Strong’ and could take any form that the team preferred to create. For example, the team could create artwork or a dance, recite a poem or story, perform a skit or a song, demonstrate a sport or an aspect of Jamaican culture, or any other concept they choose. While the format is chosen by each school, the content should showwhat Jamaica Strongmeans to the school team. Entries should be created around student ideas, should be a collaborative and fun experience for all, and should be kept to one page in length (if written), or no more than two minutes (if in video format). A picture can be taken of any artwork created. The contest started on October 15, and the deadline for submissions was on December 1, with the judges expected to make their decisions in early December. Five grand prizes will be awarded to the best entries received from schools in all parishes plus two runner-up schools, and three members. The grand prize will be a catered lunch at each winning school by a local restaurant (details to be announced once the winner is chosen). In addition, there will be prizes for two runner-up schools. A special event will be organised in Jamaica, through a partnership with the Early Childhood Commission (ECC), and in Toronto to formally announce and celebrate the winners in December.. 4 The Alliance of Jamaican Alumni Associations will have its holiday event – Christmas Mingle 2022 – at the Jamaican Canadian Centre on December 9 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $40, which includes a meal, prizes and surprises.
